How to deal with a huge amount of work

You probably know this situation; it is a normal school day in your school life and you are quite glad about the balanced amount of work, you have to do because you can cope with it and then, all of a sudden, a lot of teachers require you to buy ten new books and write an essay about every single page.
Okay, in the most cases, it is not that much of work, but what I mean is a lot of tasks appearing unforseeably suddenly and are required to get done, often in a rather short period of time.
At this point, you can either panic and procrastinate or deal with it. I have created a five- step- plan of how to deal with a lot of work.

  1. Define the work you have to do. If you say, that you just want to 'get done all of your work' you will not be able to plan it properly. So, start by going through your calendar and eliminate all the tasks you have to do. Make a list and try to assume, how much time each tasks required. In doing so, you really have to read your tasks carefully and completely. So, do not write just the subject or topic on your list, but the exact task.
  2. Nextly, eliminate the time you have. You can do this by looking through your calendar (if you have one) or just estimating the time you have. Do not only focus on long periods of time, but also smaller amounts of time. Do not search for a time space long enough to get done one task completely, but just search for as much time as possible. The time spaces should, however, be longer than 15 minutes because in shorter periods of time, your brain will not have enough time to understand and work on a topic properly. 
  3. After having done this, schedule and organize your tasks. I would recommend starting with the most important or hardest task or the one that has to be done the quickest. Generally, go from hard work to less hard work. As already recommended above, do not schedule each task to a time space long enough to get the whole task done but allow tasks to be splitted up (unless this is for some reason really impossible). Schedule all of your tasks and not just the few next ones. Try to make use of the parkinson law to get the most out of your time. If you have left time after the tasks are done or at the end of the day, schedule a 'do- the- rest' task there, where you have some extra time in case you were not able to finish off a task.
  4. So, now you have all your assignments and tasks scheduled, now comes the really important part of this method, now you have to actually do the tasks. Disconnect from as much distarctions as possible and always keep an eye on your schedule. Do not let yourself stop until the task is done or the time is over and maybe reward yourself after a task is done or a productive day is over.
  5. In order to improve this system, review it after all tasks are done. Take some time and think of whether this method was helpful or what could be improved and change the method the next time in order to make it become better every single time.
To my mind, this five steps are really helpful if you want to get a lot of work done. They are, however, only for days, when you have a really overwhelming amount of work to do. For normal days with average amount of work, I would recommend another planning system.
